Roof Over Our Heads – Building Update

Roof Materials Are Here and  Ready For Mounting.

We’re using logs and reeds for the roof. They’ll later be covered with earthen rendering.

These natural materials, applied with traditional methods. Will keep the buildings cool in summer yet warm in winter.

They were delivered several weeks ago. But the reeds needed time to dry out.

They’re perfect now all dry and golden.

It may look like we’re using a lot of wood but they come from a  sustainable source, from Sharqia in Egypt.

Great logs from renewable resources. The trees are cultivated specifically for domestic use not for export and are replanted.

The reed roofing is all set to go

Here are the buildings we’ve started so far;

What a lovely golden colour!

These reeds are a lovely and  golden now but when they first came they were quite green until they completely dried.

We’ve chosen reed roofs not only because they are sustainable but are also weather resistant.

The pockets of air in the straw make them excellent  insulators against hot and cold weather. Whilst being light and airy.

We’d love to leave them like this but it’s not really a good idea. Even though we hardly get any rainfall. When it does come, it does so in biblical proportions!

So much so that all the accumulated sand and grit from the roof is washed down through the reeds into the buildings. Which as you can guess makes a right mess!

But we’ll probably keep our therapeutic bathrooms with  reed roofs only. That will give a nice outdoor feeling!

Earthen rendering

Will cover the reeds on all the service buildings – except of course the bathrooms!

In fact, it’s an earthen mix that’s been used for thousands of years in Egypt dating back to the time of the Pharaohs.

So as well as being cheap, they will naturally, be less toxic; very sustainable and durable, requiring minimum maintenance.

Although these roofs are very cheap to make, they are quite labour intensive.

So much so, it explains the reason why we have an expansive team of local builders. Making this project truly sustainable.

The Need to Stabilize

Most of the roofs on the service buildings will have the  traditional mix of earthen rendering.

However, the large restaurant roof will have to have a small percentage of cement added to stabilize it for safety and to comply with building codes.

Marsa Alam Desert Retreat - Spiritual Retreat Progress

The buildings still look a little stark but we’re pleased with the progress.

The builders are now working in temperatures  up to 38 degrees Celsius some days!

Starting at 5.00 am to capitalize on the coolest part of the day. They really are a great team!

We are so grateful for all the help and support we’re receiving. Our thanks go out to everyone 🙂

Thank you Diane and thanks for following us too! Yes the buildings are beautiful, the builders are doing a grand job. Once the earth rendering goes on these roofs are pretty durable. There are houses here that are hundreds of years old with these kind of roofs that are still bearing up. So fingers crossed they should be around for a long time😊
