Burnout is a form of stress that can cause physical and emotional exhaustion. It can also cause a feeling of ineffectiveness and a sense of a lack of accomplishment. At certain times, you might find that your work days and days-off can feel like a drag, and that your motivation levels are extremely low. Perhaps you despise the idea of going into the office while the thought of completing any sort of work fills you with dread. All of this, along with a lack of patience, a lack of fulfillment and a high level of irritability could be clear signs that you are suffering from burnout, but what are the main signs that you could be suffering from burnout?
You are completely exhausted
This is when you find it hard to get out of bed and anything that requires effort leaves you feeling sick. Even the idea of going to work, speaking with people or the idea of engaging in tasks that you’re great at, leaves you feeling physically sick.
Your work becomes emotionally draining
Social workers were first identified to suffer from burnouts as the nature of their clients and the issues they were presented with resulted in them feeling emotionally, mentally and physically drained. If your work or daily life involves a high level of emotion and there is nothing to help deal with this, it can result in problems with the adrenal glands. Consequently, this would cause severe fatigue and a breakdown in the body’s defense mechanism that should normally help to manage stress.
You have no balance between life and work
If you do not have a healthy work-life balance and your activities generally favor more of work, then it is a clear sign that you could be suffering from a burnout. If you have no hobbies or social life, then you are more than likely to focus more on work and that can lead to burnout.

A lack of positive emotions
Burnout can often be identified by a constant absence of positive emotions. Therefore, you might find yourself focusing more on perceived threats, problems, worries or emergencies, feeling like the things you used to enjoy no longer give you that sense of satisfaction.
You lose control easily
You might feel as though the things you once had control over are slowly slipping away. This could include your friends or even your love life. If the people you love are treating you differently and you begin to feel as though the control you once had is no longer there, then it can lead to Burnout.
You are forgetful and suffer from insomnia
When you suffer from burnout, you might find that you have problems falling asleep or even staying asleep. This can become a real problem because regardless of how tired you are, you cannot sleep. The tiredness that comes with this can cause a lack of focus and a level of forgetfulness. This can stop you from getting things done and can lead to a problem in itself.
Physical signs
Burnout is not just about your mental health because there are some physical effects as well. Stress, anxiety and fatigue can cause headaches, chest pains, shortness of breath and heart palpitations. Along with this, your immune system may be compromised and so, you might pick up more illnesses.
Burnout can happen to anyone at any time and for a number of reasons. Therefore, it is important to deal with it in the right way by reaching out, being honest and taking care of yourself in order to make a full recovery. Take the following test to find out if you are suffering from burnout.
